Preparing Your Equine For The Fall

I’m always looking for unique ways to assist in preparation for a hunt; as of late much of that focus has turned toward the use of my horses to pack into the backcountry. While the last century of packing with stock remains widely unchanged, there are still many ways to prepare yourself and your horse or mule. In comes the Pack Out Trainer.

The Pack Out Trainer, designed by Kyle Ceynar, was developed as a ruck trainer. This product closely mirrors the dimensions of a big game quarter and can be filled with a variety of materials to achieve your desired weight. While the Pack Out Strong™ was designed for human use, I had a very unique interest in its application as a tool to practice with pack stock.

The products big game quarter dimensions and shape provide an opportunity to train and test your packing skills.  Practice different hitches and observe how well the weighted quarter rides across whatever packsaddle setup you desire (riding saddle, decker, sawbuck).

*If you’re equine is new to packing be sure to take the time and desensitize them to the trainer before securing- good horsemanship always comes before our own interests!

The Pack Out Trainer is also an excellent tool to help season a horse who may be new to packing. Its light weight allows the horse to gain confidence and also become familiarized to an oblong item strapped to its side. As self-assurance is gained, a pair of these trainers can be filled to your desired weight and easily transitioned to a means of conditioning your equine. For those looking for a challenge, and to further develop their packing skill, secure an object of differing size and shape (but equal weight) on the opposite side of the horse and see how quickly things will need to be adjusted for a perfectly riding load.

In addition, the trainer can be used to practice manti building with an unconventional shape.

Maybe you’ve packed all your life but are prepping for your first western big game hunt. Maybe you’re a long time hunter but new to packing with equines. Maybe you’re somewhere in the middle and just looking to train a green horse. Regardless, I believe you’ll find the Pack Out Strong™ a useful tool in preparation of your next western hunting adventure.
